Drunk Food Fusions and Late Night Eats

Posted on: November 21, 2008

Hot dogs on tacos?  Macaroni on pizza?  Burgers with peanut butter?  Such unusual pairings can only be appealing to the intoxicated college crowd.  Back in March, endless simmer compiled a list on the Top 10 Drunk College Foods, which ranked the college favorite across the country.  The innovative food fusions were some of the top choices, along with giant burritos and slices of pizza larger than your head.

Unfortunately, traveling from Central New York to the University of Georgia just for a Luther Burger (a bacon cheeseburger on a grilled donut bun) is near impossible for the average college student.  So what creative combinations and late night delicacies are accessible to the SU crowd?

  • If you’re up for a road trip, try a garbage plate from Nick Tahou Hots in Rochester, NY.  This local favorite starts with base of home fries, macaroni salad, baked beans, or french fries.  It’s topped with a choice of meats and dressed with spicy mustard, chopped onions, and the Nick Tahou signature hot sauce.  Just keep in mind – garbage plates aren’t for the intoxicated crowd looking for a crazy meal on a whim.  Nick Tahou Hots is an hour and a half from SU and is only open until 8 pm.
  • Although not by any means unusual, Augie’s Pizza on Marshall Street is a favorite of the SU bar crowd.  the $1.25 cheese slices are cheaper than most.  It’s open til 3 am every night but Sunday, perfect for grabbing a slice for the walk home after an epic night at Chuck’s.
  • Wings is another late night SU delicacy.  A half pound of boneless wings starts at $5.99.  They come in 22 flavors, but the recommendation from my household is honey bar-b-que.  They also have ribs, sandwiches, and delicious cajun waffle fries.  They’re open until 1 Sunday through Wednesday, 3 am Thursday through Friday, and 2 am on Saturday.  Check out their full menu on campusfood.com.
  • Kalzonies is new to the campus food scene this year, and so far has received some positive buzz.  As my roommate so eloquently puts it, “they’re open crazy late and they have a bajillion topping options.”  For only $6 you can choose from a wide variety of pre-created calzones, or you can create your own from 28 ingredient options.
  • And for those with a sweet tooth, satisfy your craving at Insomnia Cookies, open until 3 am daily.  Their menu isn’t limited to cookies either – they serve ice cream, brownies, and milkshakes too.  Just make sure you have plenty of milk to wash down the fresh baked treats with!
